Results in Table 2 show that the conversion of furfural was high in polar solvents, but dropped significantly in nonpolar solvents: water (98.6%) > methanol (93.6%) > ethanol (82.0%) > 2-propanol (66.7%) > hexane (16.0%) ( Table 2 ; Entry 1 to 5) indicating a clear trend correlating the dielectric constant of the medium with catalytic activity.
