Increased mortality was not observed in non-smokers (pooled aHR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.50–1.28), but influenza/pneumonia mortality increased among smokers (pooled aHR: 1.75, 95% CI: 0.96–3.18), though the association remained marginally significant (Fig. 3 , Additional file 1 : Table S3).
