The main synaptic inputs rescued in C3 knockout mice were inhibitory synapses defined by expression of the vesicular inhibitory amino acid transporter (VIAAT) with a trend, that did not reach statistical significance, toward the preservation of glutamatergic synapses derived from excitatory interneurons and descending inputs (labeled by the vesicular glutamate transporter isoform 2; VGLUT2) [ 239 ].
