Annual precipitation was highly variable ( figure 4 b ), with an overall increase over the twentieth century of 5 mm per decade (95 %CI: +2.8 to +8.0 mm), but with a negative trend over the past 40 years (−11 mm per decade, 95 %CI: −16.7 to −4.8 mm).
