The evaluation of individual studies showed a trend toward a direct association between hypertensive status at baseline and risk of mortality in 15 studies, with significantly association in 9 of them, whereas a non-significant opposite trend was observed in 3 studies, and a neutral association in one ( Fig. 1 ).
