In the 63 patients who underwent tracheostomy after ECMO removal, there was a significant trend toward a stepwise increase in hospital mortality as the quartiles of tracheostomy timing increased (OR for quartile increment: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.08–3.89, p for trend = 0.029).
