The polymerization states of actin or tubulin may serve as indicators of a differentiation state; although the decision for MSCs to pursue a particular fate is far more complex than switching on/off actin or microtubule disassembly using chemical agents, there is a clear trend where increasing actin or microtubule polymerization supports osteogenesis while inhibiting their polymerization supports adipogenesis.
