The fecundity data further suggest that the R allele is associated with improved reproductive fitness even in the absence of infection ( figure 4 a , Dose 0). In contrast with mortality tolerance, which showed a nonlinear reduction in survival with increasing viral challenge, here the relationship between dose and fecundity was linear and we observed significant differences between fly genotypes in the slopes of these linear relationships ( figure 4 b , table 3 , Model 4b; dose × line: p = 0.0488), although we note that this effect was only marginally significant.
