A decreasing trend in ISM and the first intermonsoon rainfall in the wet zone of Sri Lanka where this study was mainly focused, and an islandwide increase in rainfall by extreme events, mostly due to depression and tropical cyclones during the second intermonsoon have been observed in the last few decades 30 , 31 , 75 , 76 .
