In a number of cases, we found an association between positive staining of a given galectin and 5-years OS, 5-years DFS or chemoresistance that fell just short of the traditional definition of statistical significance (see Supplementary Fig. 3 ).

Considering that our P value fell just short of the traditional definition of statistical significance, we are of the opinion that had our sample size been bigger, we would have obtained a statistically significant result.

In contrast, high lgals2 expression was associated with a good DFS, although the difference fell just short of the traditional definition of statistical significance (0.064).
