Tumour grade showed a trend towards reduced survival with increasing dedifferentiation, with colorectal cancer related deaths occurring in 34.5% (10/29), 48.4% (171/353) and 56.3% (40/71) of patients with well, moderately and poorly differentiated tumours respectively, although this did not reach statistical significance in our cohort of patients.

Whilst previous studies have suggested that tumour expression of MUC1 may be a useful prognostic factor in colorectal carcinoma [ 6 , 9 ] these studies have failed to include the presence or absence of vascular invasion in their analysis, this is known to be a highly significant prognostic factor in colorectal cancer[ 17 ].
