The reason for the significantly inferior survival of those randomised to maintenance therapy is therefore unclear. Given the small numbers of patients accrued to this study, the absence of a clear explanation for the inferior survival of the maintenance group and the marginal significance of the difference, it is probably wisest to interpret the data as showing no benefit for maintenance chemotherapy.
