Using an assay that was specific for endogenous GLP-1 and did not cross-react with the exenatide that was administered, we found that there were reduced GLP-1 levels in six of the eight subjects, while the levels increased in two of eight subjects when they received exenatide, although the differences in the hormone levels did not reach statistical significance (without exenatide 662.6 ± 270 pmol/L; with exenatide 444.2 ± 302.1 pmol/L; P = 0.055) ( Fig. 3 A ).
