DSS treatment resulted in a decrease in the colonic mRNA expression level of the tight junction molecules occludin and claudin-1, which play crucial roles in regulating intestinal paracellular permeability [ 40 ], but the differences in the expression levels of these molecules between WT and mPGES-1 −/− mice did not reach statistical significance in this study (Fig. 2 D). mPGES-1 −/− mice display anemia and extramedullary hematopoiesis in spleen mPGES-1 −/− mice exhibited marked splenomegaly by day 7 after the start of DSS administration, as shown in Fig. 3 A.
