For both FAFV and Bacteroidetes, there was a clear trend towards a higher load in patients that underwent biliary drainage (6093.8 vs 2234.2 p = 0.070, 59.2 vs 27.6, p = 0.070 respectively), but it did not reach statistical significance ( Fig 2B ).

The highest mean degree of FAFV was to be found in the duodenal fluid and this was also significantly more than in pancreatic tissue (62.8% vs 39.2%, p = 0.001; Fig 5B ) and remained borderline significant in the paired subgroup analysis, suggesting a selection of bacteria that are able to survive within pancreatic tissue.
