In analyses assessing risk of recurrences according to established patient-and tumor characteristics, clinically detected DCIS were more prone to recur locally (HR 1.78 (1.04–3.07), larger DCIS lesions were correlated to a borderline significant increased risk of in situ IBEs but not invasive IBEs (HR 1.88 (0.97–3.62) and 0.64 (0.30–1.34)), respectively.
Because of the small number of included small studies in our subgroup analysis and in accordance with the Cochrane Manual for Meta-Analyses, a borderline significant result such as our P value of 0.06, instead of the conventional value of 0.05, can be considered statistically significant [ 42 ].
The favourable effect of SafeR-mediated VP prevention on HF outcomes, however, warrants further investigation, as the combined clinical secondary outcome of cardiac death or HF hospitalization differed in favour of the SafeR group, and a borderline significant reduction in cardiovascular hospitalizations and shorter duration of hospital stay for these hospitalizations was observed.
An earlier hospital-based case-control study [ 19 ] including 304 ESCC cases (90% men), suggested borderline significant direct associations between GI (OR (95%CI) 1.1, 0.9-1.5, per 10-unit/d increment) or GL (1.2, 1.0-1.5, per 100-unit/d increment) and ESCC risk.
When participants were stratified by use of supplemental magnesium (from multivitamins or individual supplements), the linear association became borderline significant in supplement users (HR=1.33 (0.98, 1.80), P for linear trend=0.07, with every 100 mg per day decrement in magnesium intake) and disappeared in supplement non-users (HR=0.93 (0.65, 1.33), P for linear trend=0.88).
Additionally, we quantified expression of ruf6 , a non-coding RNA known to regulate transcription of the var gene family [ 62 ], and observed similar trends to those seen for var ATS quantification, albeit without statistical significance between any of the individual groups; and with borderline significant differences between ruf6 in clinical malaria cases (MAL) versus all asymptomatic samples combined ( Fig 4B ).
