In one case, based on simulations of IRS/ITN combined interventions, Yakob et al [ 16 ] recently reported that even though there is likely to be significant reduction of transmission by using 80% coverage with pyrethroid treated ITNs and DDT together at household level, this combination still resulted in higher transmission potential (basic reproductive number, R o = 11.1 down from an control baseline of 39.5), than 80% coverage with just the ITNs alone without the DDT (R o = 0.1).

Discussion The key issues in deciding whether to introduce a new screening programme include whether: (1) screening represents a cost-effective intervention (i.e., the health gains are likely to be significant compared with the costs involved); (2) uptake is likely to be sufficiently high for screening to be effective; and (3) implementation is feasible (i.e., sufficient health service resources are available to diagnose, treat and follow-up those found to have adenomas and cancer).
To this aim, we have tested whether there is a significant association between karyotype and time to death under desiccation stress to assess resistance to dehydration, a trait that is likely to be significant for the survival of populations living in the more xeric portions of this species’ extensive geographical range.
