The interpretation of I2 results adhered to established guidelines: 0–40% indicated heterogeneity might not be significant; 30–60% suggested moderate heterogeneity; 50–90% indicated substantial heterogeneity; and 75–100% suggested considerable heterogeneity (Cochrane Handbook). 12 Given the inclusion of only a small number of studies, substantial uncertainty existed in the value of I2; therefore, the p -value from the Chi-square test was also considered.
Moreover, previous works on the Jena experiment observed that biodiversity effects on belowground environments might not be significant even though aboveground effects can be observed (Bessler et al. 2009 ), which can indicate that diversity effects on soil bacterial diversity can be confounded by other environmental factors.
Due to the large differences in sample sizes across groups, in which substantial differences in allele frequencies among some underrepresented groups might not be significant due to very small sample sizes, these calculations were repeated assuming all groups having the same size of 500 each, but results were essentially the same (data not shown).
