After calculating corrected distances of nonsynonymous nucleotide substitution per nonsynonymous site ( d N ) and synonymous substitution per synonymous site ( d S ) for all genes in Ipomoea and Nicotiana relative to a common outgroup, Panax , an interesting trend toward relaxed selection in the genome of the fully autotrophic Ipomoea was revealed (fig. 4 ).
