Observationally, there was a statistically significant trend for a higher risk of Parkinson’s disease across categories of lower LDL cholesterol levels (P=0.009 for categories and P=0.001 for fifths), but at most a borderline significant association between continuous LDL cholesterol levels and Parkinson’s disease (hazard ratio for a 1 mmol/L lower LDL cholesterol level was 1.10 (95% confidence interval 1.00 to 1.21); P=0.05).
Studies on patients at high risk of malnutrition or who were obviously malnourished supplemented with high-energy ONS to contrast both calorie and protein deficits provided a clearer picture [ 45 , 48 ], showing no [ 48 ] or borderline significant effects [ 45 ] of energy and protein supplementation on muscle strength, although other relevant parameters, including dietary intake and body weight, improved.
45 46 Specifically, Bauer and colleagues suggested a borderline significant inverse association for postmenopausal women with a relative risk per 12.5 nmol/L of circulating 25(OH)D of 0.97 (0.93 to 1.00). 45 We did not find an association between genetically determined 25(OH)D concentrations and risk of breast cancer, and our study was powered to find minimum detectable odds ratios ranging from 0.84 to 0.87 per 25 nmol/L in 25(OH)D.
Although the borderline significant interactions of baseline BMI with change in leptin and of insulin with change in hsCRP may have been due to chance (multiple interactions were tested for multiple variables) they warrant evaluation in future studies; it is important to note that these potential interactions were quantitative, not qualitative with metformin (vs placebo) benefits being consistently observed.
Children in schools delivering longer‐duration interventions showed a significant increase in anxiety (0.17 SD , p = .001) and a borderline significant increase in depression compared to children in control schools, although both of small magnitude.
