Each test yielded a p value which allowed us to sort features from smallest (most likely to be significant) to largest (least likely).

We also performed a gene-annotation enrichment analysis using g:Profiler 17 , 18 , and found highly significant enrichments in several gene-annotations associated with the cell surface, including the terms plasma membrane and cell periphery (Fig. 1d, e ).
