Concerning lipid metabolism, D patients had significantly higher triglycerides (at T1 p < 0.001, at T6 p = 0.002, at T12 p < 0.001) and total cholesterol (at T6 p = 0.004, at T12 p = 0.009) than the ND group as well as a significant reduction in HDL cholesterol at T12 ( p = 0.020); markers of lipid metabolism showed a decreasing trend in both groups during observation ( Figure 2 and Table S3 ).
Greater odds of elevated IL-6 had a borderline significant association with stunting (maternal height < 145 cm; aOR = 1.97, 95% CI: 0.97, 4.02) and intrapartum infections (aOR = 2.07, 95% CI: 0.95, 4.54). aORs for antenatal infection and for any antenatal or intrapartum infection, as well as for overweight BMI status (data not shown), were greater than one across all inflammatory markers, though none met statistical significance.
After FDR correction, only the positive correlation between lignin intake and serum ALT levels in children from the Prevotella enterotype remained significant (P FDR < 0.05), while the correlations between hemicellulose intake and insulin resistance markers were close to significance (P FDR < 0.2; Supplementary Table S5 ).
Notably, participants that reported rearing domesticated animals for consumption (‘own livestock’) had lower odds of moderate or severe household food insecurity (odds ratio (OR) = 0.29 (95% CI: 0.09, 0.96)) and those that reported buying food from supermarkets had lower odds of moderate or severe household food insecurity (borderline significant, OR = 0.37 (95% CI: 0.14, 1.00)), increased dietary diversity scores (Poisson coefficient = 0.17 (95% CI: 0.10, 0.24)) and higher odds of achieving minimum dietary diversity (OR = 2.84 (95% CI: 1.79, 4.49)).
