To understand whether SIRT3 is also involved in the adaptive responses of neuronal network activity to IF, we performed immunoblot analysis of SIRT3 protein levels in hippocampal tissues and found that 24 h of FD in AL control mice had no effect on SIRT3 levels, and that mice maintained on IF for 1 month exhibited a highly significant elevation of SIRT3 levels (Fig. 2a ).

GSEA with these CIZ1-dependent transcription units also revealed highly significant overlap with genes regulated by PRC1 and PRC2 (Fig. 3a , Supplementary data 2 , tab 1 ), though unlike culture-adapted cells there was little change in PRC subunit transcript levels (Supplementary Fig. 2 ), and also no gross change in the overall immuno-staining pattern for SUZ12, RING1B or BMI1 in primary cells (Supplementary Fig. 2 ).

The difference in CDI between ORAI1 and ORAI1β, which was highly significant when CRAC currents were activated by including 10 mM of the slow buffer EGTA in the pipette (Fig. 1b–d ) disappeared when CRAC currents were activated by dialysis of 20 mM of the fast chelator BAPTA through the pipette (Fig. 1e–g ) or when extracellular Ca 2+ was replaced by Ba 2+ (Fig. 1h–j ), strongly arguing that this difference in CDI is mediated by cytosolic Ca 2+ at the vicinity of ORAI1 channels.
Similarly, although altitudinal range is associated with language diversity at high resolution with marginal significance, there is no evidence that this is caused by isolation, as altitudinal range does not result in reduction in speaker population size, even when controlling for population density (Table 3 ).
